“Our Story began
in October 1990 . . .
. . . when we founded Ann Arbor Commerce Bank. It is amazing to me that so many years have passed! Every day has been a mixture of joy and challenges. Opening our doors on the heels of the 80s, rolling along during the 90s, and heading into the uncharted waters of the 21st Century has been quite an experience!
Community Banks were rare in 1990, mainly due to mergers and acquisitions during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Since we opened, a number of local banks have sprouted in our area. We think that indicates that we had a good idea!
 I vividly remember our first day and our first customers. In fact, if I close my eyes I can read the first daily financial statement! We knew everyone who walked in the door and made a point to say, ‘Hi – we are glad you’re here. We value your business.’ That has not changed. I still read the daily statements and try to say hello to as many as I can. I cannot recite all the names these days – the thousands of friends, neighbors, relatives, and business associates who were referred to us by staff, board members, and customers.
State & Eisenhower seemed to be the ideal location, although some actually wondered why we were going to move ‘all the way out there’. You may remember that it was much quieter in 1990. Today, professional buildings, shopping, homes, and even the University of Michigan flourish around us! We began small – small building, that is. Create a sound plan, build your customer base and resources, expand with caution and reason – a business plan that has stood the “test of time”, and a philosophy we share with our customers.
We moved into the beautiful landmark building on the corner of State and Eisenhower in 1998. Over the years we have added departments, products, and services to meet the growing and changing needs of our customers.
Many things have changed since 1990. One thing that has not changed is our commitment to our customers and our community. We are proud to be part of the fabric and story of the people who live and work in our community.
